Always worthy Goldsworthy

The transient nature of Andy Goldsworthy's art has always been attractive to me. All his creations are natural, using available natural materials - leaves, stones - and are purposely meant to evolve and eventually be destroyed since they are created outside and exposed to the elements. I find this approach to art and creation more and more attractive and HONEST. There is a translation to life and a philosophy for living as all things evolve and are eventually destroyed (or cease to exist). What a beautiful thing to embrace this and hold this up in high regard, rather, than say, egotistically create glossy monuments and other "art" pieces that last "forever", as if we are that important.

Clients From Hell

Client: You told me, you’ve changed XY but you didn’t.

Me: Yes, I have. In order to see the changes you have to empty your cache and reload the site.

Client: Empty what? How do I do that?

Me: (explaining the way through the menus…)

Client: Stop. I can’t explain this to all my visitors. This is too complicated and I never had to do this before on any website. You have to make it work without this empty-cache-and-reload-thing.

Secret message in code

QR codes are just so darn cool. They've been around for a while, but are just now on the radar as a very real marketing tool. I love the secret aspect of them. You can hide a message, a URL or anything you want in this image. Just scan it with your QR reader (download the app) on any smart phone (iPhone/Droid work best). Or make your very own QR code for your name, for your website, for anything. The artist-formerly-known-as-Prince ain't got nothin' on this shit. Everyone can use it and the guerilla art possibilities are endless. Move over OBEY, I'm gonna spread some love up in this cesspool:

Jessica Hische is so cool

This woman is so smart and so talented. Her character-a-day project "Daily Dropcap" is superbly illustrated bits of typography available for use - and not just as an image, but as code to drop into a website or blog. The code of course has her name embedded in it, so you're gonna see her everywhere in any kind of search results. You're so smart Jessica. Go girl! Enjoy:

Blow it up

While making a business card for a friend who is a balloon artist, I started milling around looking at balloon animals and art. I was blown away by what I found. The balloon dress is mondo awesome, the sheep lamp, and the Jeff Koons piece. I'm not the only one who thinks so (the internet is a great way to confirm that your thoughts are NOT unique, just in case you are still under the insane delusion that you are such an amazing human whose ideas are so awesome that nobody else on the planet could have ever thought the same thing). This guy covered the coolness of balloon art. Dude.

Full time jobs mean chair races

Since taking on the full-time Creative Director position at Mirror NYC early this year, I find there is less time for my own stuff when I get home. I am usually face down in the couch by the time I drag myself through my apartment door. There is, however, a great opportunity for interesting thoughts that are office related. The office is a funny place, man. Seriously. Take for instance a tag I found on our new chairs. The graphics were so odd and even though they look like they should be very clear, I was not sure what they meant or if the company that created them saw the humor in them. I loved it, so I scanned it and added my own caption. It is now posted in my office:

Bones: Phase 2

I finally got around to soaking and drying the chicken bones to prepare them for their next task. A mild bleach solution, some scrubbing, and some sun and air seemed to get these in shape. They are now ready to be gilded. From there, I envision them as a necklace or a bracelet, woven into one of my UmamiRoad leather cuffs. We should all walk around wearing chicken bones. A great commentary on our eating habits and what we throw away and consume each day.

OK, so I got so caught up making and selling my wallets that I nearly abandoned you, my lovely blog. Harkening back to an idea I started brewing a while ago, I have been looking for something to gild, something fleeting, something perishable (chayotes did not work) something ordinary. So after courting chayotes (damn chayotes) and dentures, I finally landed. Bones. Chicken bones. Yeah, you throw them out, but they are extraordinary. Look closely at them. So beautiful, they deserve to be gilded. And yet so ordinary, they deserve to be gilded. Raw bones, greasy bones, here's the start.
